Who is
B.K.S. Iyengar ?
Sri B.K.S. Iyengar was born in 1918, in southern India.
The eleventh in a family of thirteen children and of a weak constitution,
he was struck by tuberculosis at the age of 17 and the prognosis
was virtually hopeless. It is around this time that he became
initiated into the age-old practice of Yoga by his brother-in-law,
the yoga master T. Krishnamacharya, of whom he became the disciple.
He is soon encouraged to teach and to participate in public demonstrations.
In 1937 his master sends him to Pune to give regular
classes there. It is here in this city to the south-east of
Bombay that he has been established for more than fifty years.
Married (widowed since 1974) and father of six children, he shows
how it is possible to reconcile family life and spiritual quest.
Author of several works including the famous “Yoga
Dipika, Light on Yoga”, which is thought by many to be currently
the most comprehensive book on the subject of Yoga, he founded at
Pune a yoga institute which he runs with his children, Geeta and
Prashant. The institute brings together a wide range of pupils from
all over the world and from diverse medical, political and artistic
backgrounds.
Man of practical experience and man of faith, B.K.S.
Iyengar offers a simple, precise technique, tested by himself and
able to respond to the needs of men and women in the 21st century
as it is firmly rooted in the reality of its time.
“The more my cells become conscious, the more
they allow my body to shine with a new brightness.”
